Every thing you need to know about a spray tan:

How long does a spray tan last?
Depending on a person’s activities and skin type, the tan lasts approximately 5-10 days. With follow up applications, a person can maintain the tan indefinitely. Using a good tan extender on the skin daily will help extend tanning results while keeping the tan looking healthy and glowing.
What is the difference between getting a spray tan and using cream or lotion sunless tanners at home?
Imagine the difference between finger painting your car and using an airbrush to paint it. Even with the greatest of care, and help from a friend to get all the places you cannot reach, you can’t duplicate the even consistency and natural look of a spray tan.
How do I prepare for a spray tanning session?
For the maximum result, before your session, shower and exfoliate the skin. Make sure your skin is free of perfumes, lotions, oils, deodorants, gels or any product on the skin that would create a barrier. Also, remove all jewelry (and don’t put it back on until a few hours after your tan)!
Why do I need to exfoliate?
Exfoliating insures smoother, softer skin for the spray tan application, resulting in an even and longer lasting tan. If you do not exfoliate, you will be tanning skin that is about to fall off and your tan will disappear more quickly.
Should I shave before or after the application?
Shaving is a form of exfoliation so you should shave before the application. Shaving after will take off some of your tan. After your application, be sure to use a new razor as old dull blades can dull your results.
What should I wear?
Attire for women is whatever you are comfortable with. Many things can be done to minimize tan lines. The key is your comfort level. Attire for men is boxers, swim trunks or shorts. Your tanning specialist will use the utmost discretion. Loose fitting clothing should be worn for leaving the facility. We have found that DHA reacts with wool, nylon, and silk. These fabrics should not be worn during or immediately following your tanning session.
What is the advantage of airbrush spray tanning over UV tanning?
Spray tanning is an alternative form of tanning. People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time tanning, be it natural or in tanning beds will find this form of tanning very comforting. One application with a spray tan will be equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, therefore making it cost effective. Spray tanning also spares the skin of excessive wear and tear and free from potential burns caused by the sun or tanning beds.
Can an airbrush spray tan be removed?
The color produced by a sunless tanning product does not wash off; it simply fades as the upper layers of the epidermis wear away. You can try to speed the exfoliation process by gently scrubbing the skin with a washcloth or loofah sponge. DO NOT OVER SCRUB! It may take a week or more for the “tanned” skin to disappear.
Is spray tanning safe?
YES! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self-tanning products that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient. DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity.
How long after the application can I go in water or sweat?
We recommend at least 8 hours. Sunless tan longevity varies from person to person and according to your lifestyle. Long exposure to water will fade your tan. Your outer cells will start to soak up water, which dilutes the effect of the tan. The longer you are in the water, the lighter your tan will get. Be sure to moisturize every day, this helps maintain the tan.
What if a person normally can’t get very tan?
A person CAN get a sunless tan even if they can’t get a real tan. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient, saturates the dead skin cells in the outermost layer of skin, where it turns the protein in the dead cells golden tan.
Can pregnant or nursing mothers get a spray tan?

The concern some doctors have is over whether or not the active ingredient (DHA) is able to enter the blood stream; the indications are that it cannot. DHA only penetrates the outermost layer of the skin. However, if the client is still concerned they should consult their physician first.

FYI: DHA has been used as a cosmetic ingredient in the United States since 1960 and no problems have ever been reported concerning DHA penetrating the skin, or causing problems during pregnancy.

Can a person UV tan on top of a spray tan?
Of course! But just remember that you should apply sunscreen accordingly. If you choose to expose your skin to UV rays either from the sun or a tanning bed, it is important to use a lotion with SPF to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
Normally I freckle in the sun… will a spray tan cause freckles?
No. The tanning solutions will not cause more freckles. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become LESS obvious because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the color differential between these areas and the rest of the skin.
What if I have a bald spot?
No fear, your A Spray of Sun technician can give a light spray to your bald spot too!
How can I minimize exfoliation from hot tubs, swimming pools and the ocean after I get a spray tan?
After your tan has developed and after your first post-tan shower, you can minimize water activity exfoliation by liberally and frequently applying a good, strong waterproof sunscreen (such as Bullfrog) before submersing yourself. These are very durable brands and can help protect your tan from fading.
Will the color stain my pajamas or sheets?
Excess bronzer will wash off your skin after your first post-tan shower. But until then, the color will stain some fabrics (For example: nylon, silk, wool and polyester). However, a good soaking in water will usually lift the stain from the fabric. Most fabrics and materials are completely safe — if the color rubs off on any other fabric it will simply wash out.
Should I remove any deodorant?
Yes. For the best result, remove deodorant and moisturizer from the under arm. If you do not remove deodorant, it may turn green under your underarms. If this happens to you, the green will rinse off in the shower.
I like my spray tan, but I want to be darker.
We have different solutions for different fairs of skin. On your next visit let your A Spray of Sun technician know that you want to try a darker solution. If you need to be darker this time around, we can do another session on top of the first one.
How do I keep it looking great longer?
Make sure you moisturize every day. For optimum results, have a maintenance tan every 5-10 days, according to your liking.

A spray tan is a safe alternative to avoid premature aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Using this method, you have the best of both worlds... a glowing tan without risking your health.
